The Rhode Island Blue breed is a hybrid crossing two of the best layers – the Rhode Island Red and the Australorp. This cross results in combination blue, red and black chickens. Some birds will be primarily blue, others, black, and some might even be red. Often they can be blue or black with red streaking in the neck feathers. The Rhode Island Blue is a medium production bird and an excellent layer of large brown eggs. If you’re looking for a multi-colored chicken that will out-lay most, this is your breed. Rhode Island Blues are excellent foragers and make great free-rangers. They are docile and easy-going, which makes them a family friendly breed.
