Granted, Turkens aren’t the most attractive bird in the flock, but they have a lot to offer. Originating out of Transylvania, Romania, these naked necked chickens only have about half the amount of feathers that other chickens do and absolutely no feathers on their neck at all, which is what gives them their nickname, “Naked Neck.” Turkens are a dual-purpose breed that weighs around 7 lbs at maturity and are average layers, providing about 3 medium sized, brown eggs a week. They are not prone to broodiness but they do enjoy foraging for food, which helps with pest control in your yard. And since Naked Necks are already half naked, they do really well in hot weather! Not to worry, though: as long as they have adequate shelter and insulation, Turkens do just fine in the cold weather, too. It turns out that these odd looking chickens are hardy, docile, and friendly, all of which makes them a great addition to your flock.
