This is one of our favorite birds! It is a deep mohogany color with iridescent black streaking and white speckles. Each year after molting, they become more speckled than the previous year. The Speckled Sussex is a truly stunning breed! Their beautiful feather pattern makes for great camouflage when they are free-ranging, which they are very proficient at doing. They are calm, docile, and friendly in temperament and make a great family-friendly chicken. Also, they are good layers, providing 4-5 large brown eggs a week. Speckled Sussex hens can be broody and make good mothers when allowed to hatch out her eggs.
