These are huge chickens! The Brahma is known as the “King of The Chicken” because of its remarkable size. They stand at about 30″ tall and have a deep, wide, and long body, feathered legs, and a pea comb. Roosters weigh around 10 lbs and hens weigh in at about 8 lbs. They were bred as dual-purpose birds and can actually feed a family of four if you choose the meat route. Hens lay 3-4 eggs each week, and continue laying well during the winter. Being a large breed, Brahmas mature more slowly for both meat and egg production, so keep that in mind when planning your flock. They are renowned for their gentle, docile temperament. Despite their large size, Brahmas are not generally known as bullies, though they do find themselves high in the pecking order a lot of the time, probably due to their enormous size. Some Brahmas can tend to be broody, and they make great mothers when allowed to hatch out their eggs. Another great advantage of Brahmas is they continue laying steadily throughout the winter! This friendly breed is definitely one you want to add your flock!
