Why do we begin selling chickens at 2 months old?
At 2 months of age chickens have adequate feathers to thrive without the need of brooders or heat lamps (except on the coldest days). By the time the chickens are 2 months old, we can tell the gender of the chickens, so customers can be certain if they are getting a rooster or a pullet. Chickens typically begin to lay around 4 1/2 – 7 months of age. Many times chickens will stop laying eggs for an extended period of time when they are relocated due to the stress of moving. By getting chickens at 2 months’ age, it allows them to be relocated to their new environment and adjust to it by the time they should begin laying, which maximizes their egg production. Also, at 2 months of age, pullets are still young enough to easily and quickly bond with their new owners, making them easier to be handled.
